Continuing northwest, I’ve passed through San Carlos Reservation, past Globe, AZ, on up to Tonto Basin, site of the Tonto Basin Feud and setting of Zane Grey’s To the Last Man, later published in its original, longer form as Tonto Basin. I have to give you these literary references because there certainly isn’t much else to say about this hike. Lots of scrub and distant mountains, that’s about it.

As for real life, I’d waited all month for temperature in Syracuse above 4°C, no rain or snow or icy roads, and little to no wind. Finally settled on Christmas for 2°C and 16 km/h wind and went for a 20 km bike ride. First half of the ride was into the wind and even with lined mittens my fingers were cold and stiff before the halfway point, but once the wind was at my back they warmed up. This morning it got down to -12°C, and today and tonight we’re supposed to get about 15 cm of snow. Happy winter.

A map showing my progress is here, a spreadsheet with progress detail is here, and a Google Earth KMZ file is in this Google Drive folder. Present coordinates: 33.892°N, 111.311°W.
